Participants in our King Adult Day Enrichment Program (KADEP) choose from dozens of weekly exercise, recreational, educational and social groups and outings to learn new skills and to cultivate an independent, healthy and rewarding life experience. In this issue of eMS news, we’re highlighting one of our current groups: Art in the Era of Impressionism.
In this dynamic group, led by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Maggie Bronan, KADEP clients are studying different artists from the Impressionist Movement. Clients learn about their lives, history, and preferred art mediums and then complete projects based on their works. The group has studied many artists together including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, and more. Benefits of this group include concentration; fine motor skills; social skills and interaction; creative expression; sense of autonomy by choosing level of participation; and motivation through successful participation.
“The group is very creative and helps me to become more creative,” says Mary R. “One thing I like about the group is the comradery amongst the clients. We’re all in the same boat to a certain extent with our health conditions. We’re all learning something new and I love to learn.”
“I love to paint. It helps me use my imagination and my hands, and it brings me a sense of serenity,” explains Cathy T. “This group is unique from other art groups because we learn about the artists and what their lives looked like.”
