The RMMSC’s first open hike of the MS4MS season was just under 10,000 feet of fun! Our team and some special guests headed just south of the Denver metro area to Devil’s Head Fire Lookout, one of the coolest day hikes on the front range.
We hiked the roughly 3-mile round trip to Devil’s Head Fire Lookout — the last functioning US Forest Service fire lookout on the Front Range. The fire lookout has been in operation for more than 100 years, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to meet and talk to the Forest Service Ranger staffing the lookout station at the summit!
The out-and-back trail is perfect for the kids, featuring a steady but gradual rise of switchbacks through Aspen and pine forests on a well-kept trail. At the top fo the trail is the Ranger’s cabin, with rest and picnic areas. From the Ranger’s cabin, an iron staircase on the rock face brings up up to the Fire Lookout, which boats incredible 360-degree views of the Rocky Mountains and plains.
