SNAP Benefits Update: Government Shutdown Impact

As the federal shutdown enters its sixth week, more than 600,000 Coloradans and 42 million people nationwide are at risk of losing the SNAP (food assistance) benefits they rely on each month. The loss of federal funding has created a $120 million shortfall in Colorado alone, far beyond what local food banks can cover.

In response to a court order, the Trump administration announced it will issue only partial SNAP payments—about 50% of usual benefits—for November, using limited emergency reserves. Officials also said they will not tap additional funds that could have provided full benefits. With regular funding halted, millions of families now face serious food insecurity unless Congress acts to restore funding.

According to the USDA, states will receive details on the reduced benefit amounts soon, but implementing the system changes could take weeks or even months, leaving many SNAP recipients without benefits for an extended period.
