SNAP Benefits Update: Government Shutdown Impact

As the federal shutdown enters its sixth week, more than 600,000 Coloradans and 42 million people nationwide are at risk of losing the SNAP (food assistance) benefits they rely on each month. The loss of federal funding has created a $120 million shortfall in Colorado alone, far beyond what local food banks can cover.

On November 3, in response to ongoing lawsuits, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reversed course and announced that it will release emergency funds to states to cover half of SNAP benefits for November. There will likely be delays in getting these reduced benefits to households, and the exact timing and process have not been confirmed.  Please continue to visit cdhs.colorado.gov/SNAP for the latest updates and information.

Currently:

  • November SNAP benefits are on hold. EBT cards still work if you have leftover funds.

  • WIC and school meal programs remain open.
