Generic Name: Amantadine Common Brand Name(s): Symmetrel
Amantadine is used to treat or prevent influenza and it is also used in treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Sometimes it is effective in treating fatigue in MS patients. The mechanism of action of this is unknown.
For maximum therapeutic benefit Amantadine should be used along with healthy sleep and exercise habits.
Before taking Amantadine, tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or other seizure disorder, congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease, low blood pressure, eczema, glaucoma, or a history of mental illness, suicide attempt, or drug/alcohol addiction.
Rare Serious Side Effects to report to your healthcare provider immediately:
Blurred vision, confusion, difficult urination, fainting, hallucinations, convulsions, unusual difficulty in coordination, irritation and swelling of the eye, depression, skin rash, swelling of feet or lower legs, unexplained shortness of breath.
Common Side Effects:
Nausea, dizziness, insomnia, depression, anxiety, irritability, loss of appetite, dry mouth, constipation, headache, diarrhea, difficulty concentrating, purplish net-like blotchy spots on skin.
Precautions:
- Amantadine is not recommended for use in pregnancy. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breast-feeding.
- This medication may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not operate heavy machinery or drive until you know the effects of this medication on you.
- Talk with your healthcare provider before stopping this medication to avoid serious side effects.
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Wheezing, difficulty breathing, bad cough or chest tightness
- Fever
- Itching
- Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat
